Everett, WA Energy Audits by G & S Heating Cooling & Electric

A home energy audit may sound like a strange, esoteric service to those that don’t know what it is. However, it’s actually a very straightforward series of tests with a straightforward objective. Most homes are not evenly insulated across every room. Each room is slightly different in the way that it retains heat. This means that each room is going to warm up and cool off at a slightly different rate than the other rooms. Under normal circumstances, this isn’t a large enough different to be worth fixing. In some cases, however, a room can be so poorly insulated that it results in a lot of wasted energy. This also creates hot and cold spots around the house if the rooms are not insulated properly. Energy audits are used to find the location of the energy losses, so that they can be fixed.

G & S Heating Cooling & Electric provides comprehensive energy audits throughout the Everett, WA area.

What is an Energy Audit?

The exact process of an energy audit is going to vary between companies, but there are a few specific types that are common. Perhaps the most common kind of energy audit involves the use of a blower door. A blower door is a large fan that is set into the front door of the home. Every door and window is closed, and then the blower door is used to pressurize the home. Once the pressure inside the home is high enough, compared to outside, an HVAC technician walks from room to room with a smoke pencil. Any area that isn’t properly insulated will allow air to out of the home, which blows on the smoke pencil. Then all the HVAC technician needs to do is follow the smoke trail to the leak.

The Benefits of Energy Audits

The truly sinister thing about insulation problems is that, despite costing homeowners millions in cumulative energy lost, they are so difficult to detect that most people will never notice them. An energy audit is the best way to identify areas of your home that are allowing too much energy to escape. Whether it’s because of an improperly sealed window, door, or just poor insulation, a lot of these leaks are far too small to be noticed by the naked eye. Having an energy audit done allows us to isolate and fix all of your insulation problems at the same time, potentially drastically increasing your home’s energy efficiency and saving you money. Saving money isn’t the only benefit, however.

As previously mentioned, insulation problems can also cause uneven heating and cooling throughout your home. An energy audit can help make your home more comfortable than you ever thought it could be, just by sealing a few leaks. Taking care of poor insulation can also improve the air quality in your home, by sealing any holes that could allow airborne particulates into the house. If you suffer from allergies, this is a huge benefit. Fewer holes in your insulation means fewer allergens can make it into your indoor air. You’d be surprised at how much your allergies could improve after an energy audit.
