The Benefits of LED Lighting

an-incandescent-bulbYou are getting ready for bed, and make a quick trip to the restroom before heading down for a good night’s sleep. You flip the light switch on, and your yawn of exhaustion quickly changes to a groan of frustration as the bulb flashes briefly, and then snuffs out. It is just one of those minor inconveniences that can lead to real aggravation in our lives, and there is really nothing that you can do about it. Right?

Well, it is true that there is no light bulb out there today that is going to last forever. This does not mean, however, that there is not a better option out there. If you are using incandescent light bulbs, or even CFL bulbs, throughout your home, then you are missing out. On what, you ask! All of the benefits that LED lighting has to offer! LED lights are unmatched by competing types of bulbs, and in a number of ways.

What Makes LEDs So Great?

If you were to ask your electrician in Shoreline, WA what types of bulbs he or she uses in his or her own home, we’d be surprised if the answer were not “LEDs, of course!”. We’re not getting a kickback from big LED for saying this, either. We’ve got some information to share that will definitely help you to better understand just why it is that LED light bulbs are the way to go.

How They Work

First things first — how do LEDs work? LED lighting using multiple light emitting diodes in a single bulb. The LEDs themselves are basically little semi-conductors, and they light up as electrical current passes through a microchip. The LEDs themselves are actually very tiny.

Benefits

LEDs do not throw heat the way that incandescent or CFL bulbs can, because they use heat sinks to absorb the heat that is generated in their use and dissipate that heat into the surrounding environment. This helps to prevent burns.

Additionally, LEDs don’t really “burn out” the way that other light bulbs do. Over time, the amount of lumens that they can put out will depreciate, and you’ll want to replace them as they dim. This brings us to the major benefit of LED bulbs — longevity.

According to Energy.gov, LED light bulbs typically last 25x longer than incandescent lighting can. That means that your life is a whole lot more convenient, with light bulbs giving out on you much less frequently. It also means that you are spending less money on replacement bulbs.

LED bulbs are more expensive than incandescent bulbs, of course, but the energy savings are still considerable. Not only do they last longer, but LED bulbs use at least 75% less energy than incandescent ones! That is a major difference, and it can really add up over the years.

LED bulbs are rugged and directional, making them ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications. Let our electricians know what you have in mind for your next lighting project. Chances are that LED is the way that you’ll want to go.
