For Whom the Bell Tolls: Sounds Signaling AC Repair Needs

You turn on your air conditioner and starts blasting hot air into your home. Clearly it is time to have it repaired. Perhaps it won’t start up at all, another pretty clear cut sign that repairs are in your immediate future. We here at G&S Heating, Cooling & Electric, Inc., though, encourage homeowners to schedule AC repairs at the sign of any trouble with their systems, even if they are still operational. Even strange sounds, after all, can alert AC users to the fact that something is wrong with their systems. Here are a few to keep your ears open for. If you notice these sounds coming from your AC, don’t hesitate to take action. Contact us to schedule truly exceptional AC repairs.

  • Motor is Humming: The motor in your central AC system is not going to operate without making any noise. However, if your motor is just humming away and not doing much else, it is possible that you have a faulty start capacitor. The start capacitor in your AC is responsible for giving the motor a jump, so to speak, so that it can get up and running when needed.
  • Hissing or Whistling: Your air conditioner should not sound like a trapped animal when it is operating. As is the case with other signs of trouble, hissing or whistling sounds can indicate a few different problems. In many cases, this is the result of holes in air ducts. As the air escapes your ductwork, wasting energy and putting your comfort in peril, the pressure with which it exits the system can lead to such sounds.
  • Clanging or Banging: Again, there are a lot of different potential problems which could lead to such sounds. There could be a loose component in your outdoor unit, or your ducts could simply be contracting and expanding. The only way to know for certain what the problem is, and to have it resolved entirely, is to schedule prompt AC repairs with a qualified professional.
