Air ConditioningThe 3 Essential Components of a Zone Control System

Why utilize a zone control system? Many homeowners have furnaces, heat pumps, central air conditioners, and other HVAC systems. These systems are dependent upon air ducts in order to distribute heated or cooled air throughout their homes. However, while ductwork can be very effective and efficient the fact remains that many people would prefer not to heat and cool their entire home to the same temperature throughout. What fewer people realize is that taking more control over air distribution is simpler than they may think. This is where a zone control system comes in handy!

By using a zone control system, you can exercise more control over the distribution of heated and/or cooled air in your home. Below is some information regarding the equipment that makes this possible.

#1 – Thermostats

A zone control system effectively breaks your home up into multiple temperature zones. Multiple thermostats are utilized to regulate temperatures within those independent zones. Each thermostat controls the temperature within the zone it’s installed in. In addition, a thermostat exerts control by switching heating or cooling devices on or off, or by regulating the flow of a heat transfer fluid as needed, to maintain the correct temperature.

#2 – Electronic Dampers

When the temperature setting is adjusted for any given temperature zone in your home, the distribution of heated or cooled air must be regulated in accordance with the temperature that is set. This is where your electronic dampers come into play. These dampers are installed directly into the air ducts of your HVAC system. The location of the dampers depend on how much heating or cooling you need and where these dampers will open or close accordingly. In conclusion, this allows more conditioned air into the zone or will stem the flow as needed.

#3 – The Control Panel

At the center of your zone control system is the control panel. It is responsible for relaying information between the dampers and the thermostat, ensuring that your home comfort needs are met.
