Geothermal systems are essentially heat pumps—they provide both heating and cooling by moving heat into or out of your home. In cooling mode, a traditional air-source heat pump will remove heat from your home and exhaust it into the outdoor air. In heating mode, it absorbs ambient heat from the outdoor air and moves it into your home.

Geothermal systems do the exact same thing except they use either the ground or a body of water instead of the outdoor air. For ground-source heat pumps, a long coil of pipes is buried in the ground where the temperature stays around 50° F all year long. For water-source heat pumps, this same type of pipe loop is submerged in a pond, lake or stream.

In cooling mode, the geothermal system will remove heat from your home and then exhaust it into the ground or into the body of water. In heating mode the process is reversed: heat from the ground or the water is absorbed by the pipes and then exhausted into your home to keep you comfortable.
