GeothermalWhat Is Geothermal and Why You Should Care?

Are you in the market for an energy-efficient alternative to conventional cooling and heating systems? Do you wish there were a more renewable energy resource that didn’t rely heavily on electricity or fossil fuels? Whether you’re looking to save some money on your energy bills or you simply care about the future of the environment, geothermal technology is quickly taking root throughout America.

While it’s not necessarily right for all homes, when professionally installed, it can provide excellent year-round comfort to your home. But many do not yet know what geothermal is or how it works. In today’s post, we’d like to tell you a little bit more about geothermal in North Seattle so that you can make an informed decision about your HVAC options. Call G&S Heating, Cooling & Electrical, Inc. today for more information or to schedule a service.

Geothermal technology relies on the thermal energy of the earth just below the surface to heat and cool air for your home. The ground just below the surface retains a moderate temperature throughout the year, which varies according to altitude and latitude. An anti-freeze is circulated through underground piping adjacent to your home. This antifreeze will either absorb heat for use in your home from the ground, or disperse heat collected from the air in your home, depending upon the season. It works like an air source heat pump, except it draws its thermal energy not from the air outside the heat pump, but from the temperature of the ground itself.

A new system begins with excavation and the installation of underground piping in either a vertical or horizontal arrangement. The vertical wells go deep within the earth while the horizontal bed is relatively shallow. They can also be installed in a nearby water source. These are connected to a heat pump and air handler that recirculates the air throughout your home. Call G&S Heating, Cooling & Electrical, Inc. today for all of your geothermal needs in North Seattle. We can make sure that your property is right for geothermal installation and that it meets your cooling and heating expectations. Our technicians are here to help you take advantage of all that geothermal technology has to offer.
