Winter is here, and that means it’s time to make sure that your furnace it capable of keeping you warm for the next few months. If your furnace isn’t up to the task, you should replace it sooner rather than later. Otherwise, you may find yourself without proper heating for a few days when your furnace breaks down on you. That won’t be a pleasant experience for anybody. So, in order to avoid that unfortunate scenario, let’s take a look at some of the signs that you need to replace your furnace right now.
Furnaces near the end of their lifespans have accumulated a lot of wear and tear. The various parts of the furnace are so worn out that their efficiency will start to noticeably decline. This will force the system to stay on for longer and longer in order to compensate, which will lead to higher and higher heating bills. If your furnace seems to be costing more and more to operate, it’s likely time to replace it.
Rising Repair Costs
The same wear and tear that causes a decline in efficiency also makes it increasingly likely that various parts of the system will start to break down. Normally, a furnace shouldn’t need repairs more than once or twice a year. In an older furnace, though, parts will break much more frequently. If you have to repair your furnace every couple of months, it’s a sign that you need to replace the system.
Furnaces are only really manufactured to last for about 20 years or so. Once they get older than that, problems like those listed above become more and more frequent. It becomes increasingly expensive to maintain the system, and advances in more modern furnace technology make the older one seem that much more inefficient. If your furnace is older than two decades, you should have it replaced.
