How Geothermal Systems Work

Before we can get into the specifics of geothermal cost/benefit analysis, it’s important for you to understand how geothermal systems actually work. Geothermal systems are heat pumps, which means that they are non–combustion systems. Rather than burning any kind of fuel to create heat, heat pumps move heat from one place to another by using refrigerant. Most heat pumps operate from an air source, siphoning thermal energy from the air to heat the home. Geothermal systems, however, use subterranean thermal energy to condition the home.

Approximately ten–to–fifteen feet underground, the temperature remains between fifty and sixty degrees Fahrenheit year–round. There is hardly any variation in temperature, regardless of the weather above–ground. A geothermal system is designed to harness this subterranean temperature to both heat and cool the home. This is done by utilizing a wide pipe loop, which is installed underground and filled with either water or refrigerant. The loop is connected to the central geothermal pump, which is connected to the ductwork of the house. When the geothermal system is activated, it begins cycling the refrigerant through the main unit and drawing thermal energy out of it. That energy is then put to use heating or cooling the air being circulated throughout the house.

Why Investing in Geothermal is a Good Idea

There are two financial reasons that you’d want to invest in a geothermal system, one of which is common to all heat pumps and one of which is specific to geothermal. The first reason is that all heat pump systems are much more energy efficient than more traditional combustion systems. By not burning fuel, the heat pump saves you money that would otherwise be spent on powering the system. Heat pump systems pay for themselves within a few years, after which all of their savings go directly into your pocket.

The second advantage is specific to geothermal systems. Though all heat pumps are energy efficient, there is one problem that air source heat pumps run into and geothermal systems don’t. When the air temperature drops significantly, like below freezing, there is very little thermal energy in the air for heat pumps to use. This can lead to drops in air source heat pump efficiency in climates that frequently experience freezing temperatures. As a geothermal system relies on a constant temperature source, it never has to deal with fluctuations in the thermal energy supply.
