Steps Involved with Geothermal Installation
As previously mentioned, geothermal installation involves a bit more effort than most other heating systems. The typical house is already outfitted to accept things like forced air heating or cooling systems. One simply has to hook up the new unit to the proper ducts and electrical grid. Geothermal, on the other hand, requires some digging. Before we get to that part, however, some planning needs to be done.
Geothermal systems rely on an underground pipe loop to supply them with subterranean thermal energy. This pipe loop is installed outside of the house, typically to a depth of ten or fifteen feet. The size of the pipe loop largely depends on how much open space you have available. Size is also affected by how large your house is. The larger your house, the larger the pipe loop is going to have to be. Next, the orientation of the pipe loop will have to be determined. Geothermal pipe loops can be installed either vertically or horizontally, depending on the space requirements. In more densely populated areas, where there is less square footage per property, vertical loops are often used. Otherwise, horizontal loops are an option.
After the parameters of the pipe loop are established, actual installation begins. If a horizontal orientation is being used, a large trench will be excavated so that the pipe can be laid. In vertical installations, holes are drilled for the pipes to be pushed into. Once the pipes are installed, they are filled with either water or an anti–freeze mixture and connected to the geothermal unit inside the house.
