Geothermal System Service

Geothermal systems take advantage of a relatively simple yet effective design to maintain comfortable temperatures in your home. Because of the simple system of a condenser or heat pump and a series of pipes, a geothermal system can last effectively for up to 25 years without needing to be replaced. In order to get this kind of life from your geothermal system, you will need to make sure it is properly serviced and maintained. Otherwise, your investment in a total home comfort solution will be lost more quickly than expected.

                Geothermal System Installation Tip

When you are planning to install a geothermal heating system in Seattle there are a few factors that you need to research. Two factors that will differentiate geothermal systems is the COP (Coefficient of Performance) and the EER (Energy Efficiency Rating) ratings. The COP indicates how well a system will heat a home, and the EER rating indicates the heating efficiency. If you need help finding the best system for your home call G & S Heating, Coolin, and Electric.

How Geothermal Systems Work

Despite the relatively simple design, the components of a geothermal system must be precisely calibrated in order to work properly. To start, a network of pipes circulates a solution of water and coolant throughout the system between the ground and the condenser or heat pump connected to your air handler. When pumped below ground, this liquid gathers geothermal energy from the earth. This liquid is then circulated back up through the pump, where the heat is extracted and pumped out as air through your home’s ductwork.

Because of the precise nature of the pipes and pump, as well as the specialized subterranean installation of the pipes and normal wear and tear on the system, you can see why geothermal system service is so critical.

Scheduling Geothermal Service

Most of the service needs of a geothermal system revolve around keeping the components clean and replacing certain components regularly. There are a number of filters, for example, in the heat pump, which need to be cleaned and/or replaced regularly. Any disposable filters should be removed and replaced every six to twelve months, and any of the non–disposable type should be cleaned at about the same intervals. This keeps the filters from becoming clogged, which can lead to overworking or permanent damage to the pump.

Another set of components that must be kept clean are the condenser coils. Any dirt build–up on the coils can act as insulation, preventing the system from circulating heat properly. This puts extra strain on the system, which can cause uneven and inefficient temperature control throughout your home.

Proper geothermal system service keeps the whole system running more efficiently, which saves you money in two ways. First, a more efficient system means lower energy bills each month. Second, a system that is well–maintained will last longer before needing to replaced, saving you from installing a whole new system, which can be very costly.
