What is a Ductless Split System?
First, let’s talk about what a ductless split system actually is. A ductless split is a heat pump, moving pre–existing heat from one place to another instead of burning fuel to create its own. It’s actually pretty similar to an air conditioner in terms of its construction. There are at least two units involved in any ductless system, just like an air conditioner, one installed in the room and one installed on the outside of the house. When the system is turned on, one unit will begin to evaporate refrigerant within a coil housed inside it. The refrigerant gas absorbs thermal energy from the surrounding air. Then, the refrigerant travels to the other unit to be condensed back into a liquid. This releases the thermal energy to be blown out into the space.
What makes a ductless split system more than a simple air conditioner is the ability to actually reverse the flow of refrigerant within its system. This allows the ductless split to move heat both ways, allowing for heating and cooling functions. The ability to act as both a heater and an air conditioner is just one of the advantages to choosing a ductless split system.
