Use Your Shades to Your Benefit!

Some of these tips are going to sound so simple that you’ll wonder if they can really make that much of a difference,  or perhaps why you haven’t been putting them into practice all this time. Well, they are beneficial, and it’s never too late to start! This first one is among the simplest ways in which to chip away at your energy costs.

During the summer season, when the day is at its hottest, pull the shades closed. This will help you to cut down on unwanted heat gain in your home. In the winter, be sure to open the shades up during the sunniest time of the day, in order to exploit the free thermal energy provided by the sun.

Use Your Ceiling Fans! Yes, All Year!

As you no doubt realize, the ceiling fans in your home are not going to actually cool the air down. They can, however, help you to keep cool air moving throughout your home during the summer season when you are running your AC. That is how they improve comfort, and allow you to raise the temperature a bit at the thermostat,  which in turn helps to lower cooling costs.

What some homeowners don’t realize, though, is that they should be using these ceiling fans all year long. In the winter,  just reverse the direction in which the blades turn. You can do this by flipping a switch right on the fixture itself, on most models. By reversing the direction in which the blades turn, you can use the fan to force heat that is trapped up at the ceiling back down into the living space.

Schedule Maintenance!

This is the big one. It doesn’t matter how high the efficiency rating on your heater or your AC may be. If you fail to schedule the routine maintenance that your system needs to excel in its operation, then it is not going to operate as efficiently as it otherwise would. Be sure to let the pros on our staff handle your HVAC maintenance services.
