What Exactly is a HEPA filter?

If you have done some research regarding residential air filtration systems, you may have run across the acronym HEPA and wondered what it meant and if it was something to consider installing for your home. HEPA is a type of extremely effective air filter, but whether it will work with your home and its HVAC system or not is something you need to take up with indoor air quality experts. It’s important to have the right type of air filtration installed for your house, or else you may end up with either poor quality air or a heating and cooling system put under too much strain.

The best way to make sure that you have air filtration that meets the needs of your household is to contact the indoor air quality team at G&S Heating, Cooling & Electrical, Inc. We provide a variety of indoor air quality installations and services, including HEPA filters, in Monroe, WA and throughout the Puget Sound Area.

Details of the HEPA filter

HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particular Air, and designates a filter that has passed U.S. Department of Energy tests to prove that it can trap at least 99.97% of particles less than 0.3 microns in size that attempt to pass through it. HEPA filters usually consist of a mat of randomly arrange fibers that trap particles.

Because of the high efficiency of HEPA filters, they work very well at preventing the circulation of allergens and asthma-triggering particles. HEPA filters are often found in hospitals and other health care buildings for this reason.

Although a HEPA filter’s power at trapping pollutants makes it sound like an excellent choice to install in your home, you must move with caution. If a filter is too powerful for an HVAC system, it will not only block pollutants, it will block airflow as well. If you have a HEPA filter put in without professional assistance to make sure that it will work well with your heating and cooling system, you could end up causing extra stress on the heater and AC that will run up your bills and may even shorten your comfort system’s lifespan.
